Herzog & de Meuron
Details

Herzog & de Meuron Objects is the direct-to-consumer interiors collection from the internationally renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, whose work includes landmarks such as 56 Leonard Street, Beijing National Stadium, and VitraHaus. When the firm launched its first consumer product line, the objective was to create a digital experience that reflected the rigor, restraint, and thoughtfulness of the objects themselves. Sweden designed and developed the Shopify Plus store, approaching the project less as a conventional ecommerce site and more as a carefully curated digital exhibition.

Approach

The project began with a deep dive into both the collection and the firm’s broader architectural practice. Early in the process, the team shared a guiding principle—“We find freedom in exploration.” That idea became the foundation for the digital experience. Rather than following traditional ecommerce conventions, Sweden designed the site as an exploratory environment where products, editorial content, and inspiration coexist, encouraging discovery through browsing rather than prescribed paths.

• Custom homepage grid combining products, news, stories, and features within a flexible, editorially managed layout
• Color system inspired by the iconic yellow spines of the Herzog & de Meuron Complete Works series, implemented with accessibility and ADA compliance in mind
• Distinctive yellow navigation experience contrasted against a restrained, minimal interface
• Lightweight architecture built primarily with Liquid and CSS, prioritizing performance, simplicity, and longevity
• Non-linear navigation designed to support exploration and discovery over traditional ecommerce patterns
